I need some help here. We all know about “jumping the shark”, when a TV show has gotten so silly there’s no going back to the Land of Reason. But there is a very cringe-worthy tradition of sticking an episode like that in the middle of a show that’s otherwise still on the rails. Sometimes they’re ultimately funny, or surprisingly good; sometimes you mourn the writers’ encounter with especially good mushrooms that week. I can think of a few already but I need some suggestions of others! Is there a name for these kind of episodes as a group (aside from “let the interns write day”)?

- any musical episode (Buffy, Sanctuary)

- “let’s turn the characters into puppets/animation” (Angel, Farscape, Eureka) <— Puppet Permutation is in this category

- guest appearance from the Devil (Quantum Leap)
